For future reference to others who might read this:

The min donation is 250 miles, currently to Make-a-wish or Mile for kids. It posts to your account immediately, and counts as qualifying activity. All set for another 3 years. Very very easy.

I know its only 5k miles, but no reason to let them expire if its this easy to keep them alive. Maybe he'll get the credit card bonus of 20k and be able to do something useful with them!
