I remember reading about Delta flights that only accrue mileage from the origin city to the destination city, but I don't know if that was on a "through flight" or what.
...so-called "direct" flights, where the
flight number stays the same, are typically measured from the origin to the destination, instead of from the origin to the connection point and from the connection point to the destination. Northwest ceratinly does this; I've flown NW 9 HNL-NRT-CAN, and would've earned 70 miles more each way if I'd changed flight numbers at NRT.
This usually isn't a huge deal, since a "direct" flight is more or less heading the same direction as two connecting flights would have been heading. But if you're doing
really short flights between two cities that are less than 500 miles apart, a "direct" flight gets you 500 miles, while 2 connecting flights with different flight numbers get you 1000 miles.
