Has anyone stayed here recently?

In looking over the maps, it appears to be close to the French Quarter area, which I understand gets a little rough after dark. My wife and I are arriving at the airport at about 11:45 pm, renting a car and planning to drive to the hotel. Any guidance on safety in this area at night? I haven't been here before, but have been told that there is a lot of crime. I don't know if that means more than any other big city, or if there are true problems and concerns for personal safety.

I considered the hotel shuttle, then going back out to the airport to pick up the rental car the next day, but I see that they don't shuttle that far. Any help would be appreciated, as we are making the trip the first week of June.
