spgaston, are you trying to reck up some miles? hahah I believe you are allowed to do that, though you may have to do that one at the airport instead of web.

Here is the official statement on the online standby thing. It's part of the Web Check-In Enhancement section sent in a gold email:

Web Check-In Enhancement:

"In our continuing effort to streamline the travel experience, we're always looking for ways to improve our processes. For example, our most recent Web Check-In enhancement: the online ability to standby for alternate flights. With an applicable fare, you can now stand by for alternate flights (with the same routing, traveling earlier the same day) online as part of your Web Check-In process ... prior to going the airport"

regarding the statment about getting a F seat, F seats are usually all gone by 24hrs advance (MVPs got em) but hey you never know right
