No charge if you cancel online, nominal charge if you ring up. Cash will be back on your credit card within 5 days. I did this myself last month.

Don't leave it too late to book as the charge will take 3-4 days to hit your Amex account and Amex tends (at least in my case) to move the statement cut-off date at random each month.
