I learnt a very bitter lesson with separate tickets on AA/ QF years ago.
Even tho i had top tier status with QF, it counted for naught when the plane (AA) was delayed. They looked after their own codeshares first, after which it was up to AA to get me on the next available flight back to Sydney.

Cheaper tickets sometimes have a price...
