Yes, they are only valid on LH. If you don't plan to use them anymore you send them back to MP (the address is attached to the cert itself) and they revert to eSWUs. If you arrive to the airport early the chances of clearing the upgrade are very high.
The FedEX fee is vaived "only" for 1Ks, which seems like a moot restriction but there you have it.
IMO being able to use SWUs on LH on fares as low as V (and Z) is the main single benefit of 1K.
