Then one becomes a Plat and due to that automatically the hotel will now have to make aDouble room available or pay them the $100? Although at the time of the res they werent a Plat. Even though they Never had a res for a Double room, simply cause its in their profile.
That's exactly what I think happens.

But if you're right, this language on the Marriot website is meaningless.

Guaranteed Room Type
To ensure your complete comfort and satisfaction, we guarantee you'll receive your requested room type.

As you read it, the room type guarantee is really just a "we won't screw up" guarantee. In other words, if the hotel promises you a specific room type, they'll give you that room type. I would hope that this is the case for all guests, not just elites.

Solo business travelers may think of room type preferences as nice, but not crucial, because all they lose then their choice is unavailable is the chance to stretch out a bit more. For those of us who travel with other people, room type is of critical importance. On most stays, I will not book if I cannot reserve the room type. Why not? I'm usually traveling with a student group, and I put 4 kids in each room. That just won't work when the double double becomes a king. I also often share a room with one of my assistant coaches (all of whom are male)--my department budget is small enough that I cannot justify giving myself my own room. Neither my assistants nor I would be comfortable sharing a bed (to say nothing of what my husband would think!). In most cases when a hotel cannot give me the doubles that we've reserved, they give me rollaways and/or additional rooms at no charge, which is as it should be. Anything less would be bait and switch.

Now that I'm concentrating our stays at Marriotts, I experience this problem most often at RIs. I book a lot of penthouses and 2 bedroom suites in which I sleep 5 (or 3 coaches, each w/ their own bed). When we register we're often told that they don't have the rooms that we've reserved, so they just give us twice the number of studios, each for half of the price of the rooms we reserved. That's a fine accommodation, and one that should be available to anyone, regardless of status.
