As I doc, there are a few ways to go with this.
One, we all take an oath to help people. So if someone needs help, probably should help.
Two, you don't have to say you're a doctor, and don't have to give your name to the medics who take over. It's easy to get lost in the shuffle once the medics take over, if you want to.
Three, if somehow, someway they find out you ARE a doctor, and you didn't help, they can sue you. Again, it isn't important whether they can win -- people can sue for anything. The jury is going to be much more sympathetic to someone who helped in good conscience than to someone who stood by and watched things go sour. The good samaritan case likely gets thrown out, or at least thats what I hear from a colleague who was in the spot.
Me, I throw in and help. Did it at an airport where this guy had a seizure while working the grill. They gave me a cheesesteak for my efforts. Nobody made any effort to write down my name -- Police, TSA, Medics all showed up to the party.
