I get the impression that SYD-NRT is a route with both limited competition (due to slot limits at both ends) and high business demand. There are a lot of Australians that make that run regularly.
QF has cut back on NRT service several times, which suggests low business demand (at least in past years). Both frequency and quality of service has been reduced at least 3 times in the past 5 years. Personally I would pick CX via HKG as a better alternative, until the service level on this route goes back up to long-haul standard.
