Good on ya, mate. Show the Aussie spirit. I have been in similar situations where I have invited people I have met in the check-in queue, on a connecting flight, or even in the security queue. Once you strike up a conversation it is often a good way to continue the discussion and helps overcome of the isolation and boredom when travelling alone.

Last time I did this was with a couple I met in the AC at DFW before boarding the flight LAX connecting to QF26 to BNE. They were a lovely couple who had managed to get into the AC based on his very recently expired QC membership card and a friendly AC staff member. They did not expect to get into the LAX lounge. So, knowing they were not sure how to transfer from T4 to TBI at LAX, I waited for them on arrival at LAX T4 and walked with them to TBI. I then invited them to the First lounge (well, the excuse for a lounge). Didn't see them at AKL until reboarding, but they were still very friendly and chatty.
