In California we have a rule that the price posted on the store shelf is the price you pay. If the register scanner comes up with a higher price, it is a violation of state law and the store is obligated to sell the item at the posted price. Why shouldn't UA be treated the same way?

$1500 roundtrip is not chump change. Last I checked, Quantas was offering a $999 fare from the west coast. So essentially UA is providing an upgrade for $300 each direction (which isn't far off what is offered at Mr. Easy or the gate). So nobody should shed any tears for UA or feel like UA is being ripped off.
Never said UA was being ripped off. Just said wrong is wrong. In this case a clear mistake was made. Had a customer made a similar mistake and UA said rules are rules you would hear no end to the howling. Here people are wondering not whether their keeping these tickets is ethically wrong, but how can they work the system and get even more!

And UA does have a system whereby you can refund a ticket within 24 hours of purchase if you change your mind or make a mistake. Apparently no one here thinks UA is entitled to the same consideration. Why not?
