Imagine yourself at the store and you give the clerk $100 instead of $10, and don't notice it until you are outside. You come back in and they are all laughing and tell you to take a hike. Pretty much the same thing. UA is doing classy, if not a bit dumb, thing by honoring this fare. For people to look this gift horse in the mouth is then way out of line. I think if anyone calls UA and wants even a seat change they should charge them full fare.
Your analogy is a bit off. What would have happened if a customer bought a non-refundable ticket on united and then discovered that they made a mistake on the date calendar and got the wrong month. Do you think UA would permit them to simply cancel the transaction. I - don't - think - so.

In California we have a rule that the price posted on the store shelf is the price you pay. If the register scanner comes up with a higher price, it is a violation of state law and the store is obligated to sell the item at the posted price. Why shouldn't UA be treated the same way?

$1500 roundtrip is not chump change. Last I checked, Quantas was offering a $999 fare from the west coast. So essentially UA is providing an upgrade for $300 each direction (which isn't far off what is offered at Mr. Easy or the gate). So nobody should shed any tears for UA or feel like UA is being ripped off.
