While still a fee, THAT is far more reasonable! $100 to put back your miles on a UA flight is highway robbery and yes, I will do everything I can to counter it. If someone here does not wish this were different and does not hate that rule, I say that person is both a fool and is guilty promoting these 6 majors to push it even further by the way of bad fees! (I do not know if it's the same money to put back miles on all the 6 majors, but I know United charges too much. Other majors have their own stupidity. I know having status on an airline reduces many fees and getting perks to fly a ton is cool and all, but this still gouges the average person like me. Not fair!
Other industries have adopted "industry-standard" fees that are just as unfair. For example, banks charge outrageous fees for all sorts of things. If someone pays you and you deposit their check, and it bounces, your bank charges you. That makes no sense and is totally unfair. It's not your fault -- you were the one who got stiffed. And if the bad deposit causes one of your checks to bounce, then you get hit with lots of new fews, even if you have overdraft protection. And of course, the fees for the first bounce can then cause subsequent checks to bounce, leaving you with a cascade effect and potentially hundreds of dollars in fees. No wonder banks are raking in the bucks. (Luckily, I haven't been in a position to experience this for a few years now, but it's a bad situation for those not as fortunate.) At least the airlines aren't making big profits on the backs of those fees -- they are trying to stave off financial disaster. Personally, I disagree with how they are going about it, as from my perspective, creating a hostile relationship to your customer is not going to help, but then it's easy to criticize from the outside.

This is the part I have trouble with. Would you rent a safe-deposit box and cram it with fish heads because you don't like the bank? Would you tape a business-reply envelope to a brick and mail it back because you don't like the credit card company?
