No they are more generous in a way, as they let you "hold" a flight for 24 hours. (On aa.com however, you can only hold an all-AA itinerary, not if another carrier is involved. With phone reps, you still get 24 hrs.)
In practice 24 hours means "rest of today plus 24 hours", ie, midnight tomorrow. So make your reservations just after midnight and you may get 48 hours!
For international flights I have even gotten 72 hours.
