My understanding is "No," since AA.com allows you to HOLD an itinerary for 24 hours. That is the trade you make.
There's been limited reports of success calling to cancel/change in that window between when your itinerary shows "Purchased" and "Ticketed." If you call between when you hit the purchase button, and before it moves to "ticketed," you may have a chance. But I wouldn't count on it.
