The airlines pay each other a "set" rate per flight mile. It's usually not full "Y", but rest assured that it is FAR more than the el-cheapo fare that most passengers pay.

One time, I was so mad at DL for a supposed "mechanical problem" (just total and complete incompentence all day long and substantial evidence that they "stole" our plane to go somewhere else) that I demanded to be re-booked on a slightly earlier AA flight because I knew that they would have to pay AA a significant amount of money.
