How is what you described at the airline any different from a hotel walking a guest, paying for a room at the other hotel, and then refunding what they paid in advance. Paying for the room at the other hotel = FIMng a pax over to another airline refunding advance payment=$$$ or vouchers

As with airlines, the compensation a guest receives is usually dependent on their status with the hotel/hotel chain. The hotel is not going to give a low tier or no status guest the same compensation for a walk, that a top tier member is going to receive. The OP is right in saying he would be happy with a refund of his prepayment as thats what he is entitled to.
