"Be happy with what you've got" seems to be the approach UA is taking. I tried to have a stopover on the return in SYD as allowed in the CNZ fare rules. I talked to a very determined supervisor who said UA could always disallow the fare but they are sticking to the "no changes" requirement on this. She then quoted the fare difference.
Maybe you missed a coupla hundred posts were it was posted that
you cannot add stopovers for the HIP check that a stopover will trigger on MPM fares. Had you paid the original price I doubt it would have changed much, but you haven't. Changes to the inbound might be allowed if people were to be patient and let everything settle.
