My two week (approx) trip to SE Asia last November.
Open Jaw on United, flying into SGN, leaving from BKK.
- 3 nights HCMC
- 1 night Chau Doc
- 2 nights Phnom Penh
- 4 nights Siem Reap
- 3 nights Bangkok
Not counting the flights, my wife and I budgeted $100 a day, and actually spent far less than that.
It was not my first trip to the region, and we are going again this year for three weeks.
We stay in mid-range hotels, $20-30 a night and eat in local cafes and foodstalls. We like traveling by bus and boat, but fly when it's called for. We will usually take a tuk-tuk for short rides.
There are a variety of approaches to travel, and they are all good, IMO.
