What I meant by "staying in SYD" was contacting United and attempting to remove the SYD-AKL-SYD legs, not simply deciding not to fly them and thus jeopardizing the rest of the ticket. I figured theres a chance that they might be willing to do it on a mistake fare in order to save the cost of that codeshare seat, should the customer not want to fly it.
