If a traveling companion is not on the same record as you, you can call NW and ask them to be seated next to you in the premium seats. I know they will do this for one companion, not sure about two.
Last November I called and had them put three members of my family in the premium seats near me. We were on two different records (PNR's) - mine separate then the other three together.
