Thanks for the answers - I figured things would probably be ok, but just wanted to be sure before I tried it and found out otherwise. I figure I'll just drop by a MailBoxes Etc. or some such place (at least 2 of those in Dublin) while there and grab the supplies I'll need, looking for the sturdiest package materials.
50 lbs. should be plenty. I figure no more than 5 or 10, depending on what we end up picking up.
I saw the link with the Antlers -- "Must be as free of residue as possible. The skull must be wrapped and tips protected." ick...
As for the Caribbean and Latin American destinations being box embargoed, I may be a bit naive, but what could come in there that you couldn't try to smuggle in any other way, especially considering the box is probably dead obvious?
Maybe I'll write "(Mostly) Residue Free Antlers - Beware of Sharp Edges" on the box or something to keep nosy folks out

Nothing to do with smuggling or the contents of the boxes, more due to the sheer volume of the luggage going to these destinations during the embargo period. They also have a mximum weight limit of 70lbs during the embargo.
The bin on an aircraft is not a uniform shape, and trying to stack the bags to maximise the amount carried is a bit of an art form. In fact the loud thumps and bangs you hear during the bag loading process are the ramper perfecting his art

.
Having two hundred bags and 100 boxes makes for a difficult time loading and filling the bins as boxes dont stack the same way as bags do. Having the embargo means that AA and Eagle dont have to leave 50 bags behind to accomodate 35 boxes.
The other bag embargo in place right now is the OneXMarine bag embargo but thats another story.
