Will you slump it in Y with a 3-3 seating and birdseed?

For leisure flight up to 2 or 3 hours, I would concur with a downgrade to Y but any longer and those few extra inches make a world of difference.

If it is any comfort, GB Airways from LGW has better food and service than BA mainstream.
Unless you have money pouring out your ears, what is the point of spending much extra cash on a marginally better product, if better at all? Even if you had money pouring out your orifices, it still would not be worth it IMHO, as it's shame to waste the money. Even more so if the competition is hardly better.

At least in economy, you can bring your own birdseed, and there is a reasonable chance with OLCI and/or advanced seating to get the rows immediately behind the Club cabin so as to benefit from the hard product. I almost always end up in the A seat directly behind Club. I bring my own food at mealtime for only an extra few pounds/euros, or eat at a proper restaurant before departure. I always end up having a very pleasant flight, and have never had cause for complaint in ET. I pay a cheap fare and I get exactly what I pay for, which I find far more preferrable to spending hundreds to get birdseed served on faux-porcelain, champagne I don't drink (or champagne of questionable quality) and a general feeling I have been cheated.

The only justification I have for doing the occasional hops in Club are when it forms part of a long-haul premium booking or I am chasing tier points when traveling somewhere anyway (i.e. a hop to Barcelona last year that landed me 120 points for only 300 eurie).
