I immediately noticed the mistake and called the Executive Platinum Desk about 5 minutes after I did it. Unfortunately, the flights were oversold on part of the leg. I booked this MONTHS ago. I was also using some of my VIP upgrades for it. One portion was MIA to MAD on Iberia and they couldn't get those back.
I already have internal flights in Madrid and apartments paid for that I would have lost deposits on in Madrid and Barcelona. I ended up having to pay to go from MIA-SJU-MAD. For u$s 900 more!
What a stupid and costly mistake. I agree that at the confirmation to cancel it would be a good idea if they had a confirmation of which flights you are cancelling.
Has this happened to anyone else?? Yikes..... To make things worse the flights look full so I doubt I'll get upgraded now. There is only 1 unsold seat left. Before I was already cleared.
I think you might be too late for this one, but if it happens again: Call Web services (not the regular Customer Service number) immediately. I had one cancel, like you, when I was trying to get rid of an expired "hold" reservation. There was a disconnect between my computer screen and the AA system -- ended up canceling a real reservation. ^ I called Web services (great people!) within seconds and had it reinstated without a problem.
I no longer try to remove those expired, hold reservations.
