We did. Got "upgraded" when they put us in a smoking room after we had booked a non-smoking one. I didn't find the experience all that pleasant.
We did any had a different experience. The only odd bit was that we needed to sort of walk through the hotel kitchen to get there, but the unit was nice and bright with several windows in the bedroom and living/dining/kitchen area. We overlooked a bright and quiet courtyard and had a view of some of the rooftops of Amsterdam. There was also a large loft that we never used except to explore on the first day. The decor was a bit like Howard Johnson's, but everything was clean. We thought it was a good value. Some of the units are indeed off the slightly sketchy street behind the hotel, but the area is busy day and night and we never felt unsafe.
