Changing the FF number at the gate might be a problem. I once tried to do it: I had entered a UA FF number at booking and check in, then asked the US gate agent to change the number to my LH FFP: it didn't go through, the system kept rejecting despite the agent's best efforts.
But if you have experience changing these numbers on LH metal, then my comment is useless.
