The Proper FA response should have been, I am sorry but that middle seat is empty by FAA regulation and your children are ticketed as Lap Children and must be held securely for the duration of the flight. If you would prefer, we can retrieve the car seat for you for the safety of 1 of your children, but we will have to charge you for the seat, which can be done at the destination by the Gate Agent so as not to delay the flight. How does that sound?
I wish but they would get in trouble.
What they should do is get one of those CC readers like they have for duty free and ask what form of payment they would like to use for the self upgrade. ^
