Manufacturers are required to list one acceptable cleaning method for their products -- there may be others that are just as effective and safe for the clothing.

Some manufacturers choose the "dry clean only" option because many consumers believe it equates to quality in the garment itself.

If they were my jeans, I'd go ahead and wash in cold. Then I'd line dry (at least the first time to check the results).
