Hasn't Boeing just been eating precisely this sort of humble pie on the 747XQLR, by asking RR to come on board the project and offer a Trent as an alternative to the hitherto-exclusive GE product? I've read that Boeing is about to go to see CX to try to re-interest them in that aircraft, as CX is to make a relevant decision early next year.
