Just a question here, not a flame.

How, exactly, does United know that they caused ANY of the damage to your luggage?


I believe it is possible to check in a piece of luggage with broken wheels and torn sides. Could it not be possible to buy a badly damaged (originally expensive) piece of luggage for my next trip and then claim reimbursement for a new $800 item?
