Yes, interchangeable with ADAC. I have contacted ADAC before a trip, given them my membership number, and they have emailed to me a temporary (60-day) membership, which also allowed me to use their web site.

In return, friends in Germany who are ADAC members have received temporary AAA membership numbers.
