Only free in First Class (which I know is what we're discussing, but in order to avoid any future confusion: available on a pay per use basis in Standard Class).
I would be tempted to take GNER over Virgin. Assuming that time isn't a huge factor (given that we're looking at trains instead of planes) I would say that the benefits of GNER (fewer delays, carriages that feel more spacious, better food, wifi, view) outweigh the possibility (and let's face it, with Virgin it's only a possibility) of getting in earlier. As to the bags, if you're taking the train book a decent private hire car at each end, and have the driver deposit / collect the bags in / from the guard's van.
Don't even consider the chauffered car option.
