I used to fly TWA alot between CA and NY and when jetBlue started I was doing jetBlue every other trip because I love the first class service of TWA alot and the service of jetBlue (this was when their A320 had all 32" pitch and no trueBlue). When AA bought out TWA, I flew from CA to NY on a TWA flight and a trip back on AA... did not really enjoy the AA portion of the flight as much as I did the TWA portion. From that point on, I ditched American for jetBlue because jetBlue provided a better service than American did in first class and didn't want to try AA in coach because if they cant offer decent service in First, I just assume coach would be worst. Anways, when I shifted all my travel between CA and AA I just let my elite status fade away and just stuck with jetBlue ever since and fly AA when I need to go somewhere that jetBlue does not fly to.
Anyways, for me, I fly jetBlue not for the trueBlue points, don't really care for the elite status of AA, I fly jetBlue for the level of service provided by the crew on jetBlue flights and the overall flying experience with jetBlue. When I compare a typical AA DOMESTIC flight in first class to the typical jetBlue experience, I just came to the conclusion that Domestic First Class is pretty much a joke especailly when you compare to what is offered on jetBlue and offered by carriers in other country. However, the revampt in AA's Business Class on the 767 and 777, the proposed Virgin America's first class, and UnitedPS is def a move in the right direction. As for the trueBlue points and award, I never had a problem with earning and redeming award travel with or with out AMEX but than again I was never really focused on earning my next free trip when it came to flying jetBlue... for me, its a no brainer choice and is worth the extra money when jetBlue flights cost more than that of other airline.
I fly jetBlue because I like the overall jetBlue experience. It was never about the points, it was never about trueBlue, it was never about trying to earn that award before my points expire. Is it the DirecTV? The XM radio? The extra legroom? etc... maybe, it was about the overall service, the crew, the overall product offered by jetBlue and to this date, no airline have match that level of service for a flight in coach. You can argue Virgin America will be able to but you need alot more than a nice inflight entertainment to match the level of service offered by jetBlue.
Heres a great example of service... I used to fly SFO/OAK to JFK alot... on TWA and jetBlue.. I see the same crew member all the time and sometime they remember my name and know what I like to drink and some staff at check in know where I like to sit... I fly American and see the same crew all the time on other routes and the service was never the same unless I get a crew member that I had before on a TWA flight.
In fact, on jetBlue, I remember a crew member I only had once and she seems to know what I like six months later on a different flight... blue chips with a side of chocolate chip cookie with my can of coke and how I like a cup of ice with my bottled water. With out asking, she bought those item to me... Now thats FIRST CLASS service... Similar things had happened on TWA but never on American. Granted this does not happen every day, it just shows that jetBlue, and TWA, offered true customer service and that is why I fly jetBlue.
