I'm pretty sure that you cannot assign a seat to an infant or small child without you sitting next to said infant or small child. Children aren't allowed as unaccompanied minors until at least age 5.
I am pretty sure the idea of a minor on board with his/her parents but not nearby is not at all what AA or any airline means as an unaccompanied minor, vs. one where the parents are not on the plane at all.
That said this whole idea is full of beans.
