I booked an award in January to attend a funeral. I ended up using a 25K partner award because one segment was on AA. It was cheaper than any other way I could find. AA doesn't fly the entire route I was taking, UA had no cheap tickets and AS-metal only had no cheap tickets at times that would work for the service. I was happy to have the option to use a partner flight for the one segment to save 15K miles.
