In my experience, it is relatively easy to switch to a day earlier if the flight is not full. If you get turned down the first time, another agent 20 meters away is usually successful.
^ ^ I've had success with this as well.
Only tricky thing is when you have a connection. I got to IAD once and they couldn't figure out how the heck I was there a day early.
