"I'm sorry, we're out of cars"

How exactly does this work? I was stuck in DFW Tuesday because my connecting flight was cancelled. I decided to drive to Little Rock for an important appointment in the morning.

I'm Avis PS and rent 1-2 times a month.

I went over to the Avis preferred desk (this was about 10pm) and was told "we don't have any cars available at all." But there were dozens of cars in the Select parking spots and there was another thunderstorm coming in. The manager told me all the cars in the slots were reserved.

Okay, I understand they have to be able to provide for all their reservations, but by 10pm when flights have been cancelled all day long and another severe storm is coming in, doesn't logic say a LOT of those people probably aren't going to show up?

I'd *love* to know how many cars ended up sitting there unrented that night.

(BTW, Budget took care of me - I've never rented from them, but they gave me a one-way SUV at the mid-size rate, discounted heavily)
