I once tried to standby on an earlier UA SFO - NRT flight on an S fare and was told a resounding 'No'. Perhaps with less restrictive fares it might be given more consideration.

I have done transatlantic standby a day early with BA last year, and also TPE - BKK with KLM a day early - both without fees attached.
