"If I read this correctly, I will get:

Base miles + cabin bonus

(But no status bonus, therefore, to move up to gold, this trip isn't going to help me one bit...?)"

You will get base miles and cabin bonus miles ( 25% and 50% for business and 1st respectively ). This has no bearing on getting status

Status is based on status credits

WLG-AKL , 298 miles: 30 for J / 30 for F
AKL-HKG , 5680 miles: 160 for J / 240 for F
HKG-LHR , 5990 miles: 160 for J / 240 for F

One way journey in business class will earn you 360 status credits. In first, you will earn 510 status credits.

These are the same regardless of which OW airline you use.

You need to attain 700 status credits for Gold and 1400 for Platinum.

A round trip in either of 1st or business will get you gold, 1st class will get you close to Platinum.

After 350 tier credits you will get silver status and so be entitled to 25% mileage bonus on AA and QF flights. When you reach gold you will get 50% mileage bonus on AA and QF flights. At Platinum, you will get the 100% bonus on AA/QF flights ( and be entitled to use the QF Club as your local pub along with all the other WPs )

It is no easier getting status credits when silver or above.

With every 250 status credits you will get an upgrade credit which can be used for upgrading on QF
