OS X and Wireless in airports

I have experienced problems when in some airports with my Macbook Pro. I am used to selecting the network from my airport icon and then opening my browser and going through the prompts to actually "connect" or pay when I have to. However, I have been at a few airports where, when I connected the browser did not bring up any kind of default page for me to pay or anything. The connection was strong and seemed to work fine but I never could actually connect.

Does anyone have any experience with this?
