Makes sense -- most BA trips are short, most QF trips are long.</font>
Rather depends where you are!

The way it works is this (examples taken from my own account, all economy flying):-
QF 4038 WELLINGTON/AUCKLAND 299 75 1,000
QF 025 AUCKLAND/LOS ANGELES 6,517 1,630 8,147
BA 286 SAN FRANCISCO/LONDON[HEATHROW] 5,351 (0) 5,351
BA 1444 LONDON[HEATHROW]/EDINBURGH 332 (0) 500
AA 4171 CHICAGO[O'HARE]/GRAND RAPIDS 137 69 500
The first figure is base miles, the second is status bonus (there are two different rates because of a change of status). I've added in zeroes on the BA sectors because there's no status bonus on BA, but there is status bonus on AA.

So you see that the guarantee is applied after the bonuses have been calculated. Only if base+bonuses don't reach the guarantee do you get the guarantee. Bonuses aren't applied to the guarantee figure.
