I have the Rewards Plus Gold Card. Here are my thoughts on it:

I don't think there is much difference between it and the standard rewards gold at all--just the points issue and the higher fee. If there are other differences I am unaware of them.

I have had the card almost a year and a half and have been pleased with it. The best thing I've found with Amex in general is that they tend to really go to bat for you when you dispute a charge; seems like the longer you've been with them and the more accounts, the better. I have disputed several things and Amex simply took care of them without issue. I know others may not have had this case, but I have always had disputes handled smoothly.

As for the Gold Benefits, the double warranty (up to 1 yr) is good for things like cell phones and electronics that could break easily. (i.e. buying something from Best Buy--do NOT buy their warranty, they find ways to not honor...simply buy it on the Amex gold and if it comes with a 90 day warranty, Amex will honor a warranty for 180 days).

The 90 day accidental coverage insurance...buy something and accidently break it or lose it within 90 days, call Amex and they will credit your account for the amount (subject to a ceiling amt....I forget but it's high). I've never used this, but found it potentially useful.

I think you only get the double points at the BonusPointsMall, which includes all major retailers, except you buy your stuff online. I don't think you get them at the grocery stores and gas stations....I may be wrong. I get double HHonors points at those locations with my HHonors Amex.

The Gold Card events are pretty much useless unless you live in a very large city. They can be useful if you go to alot of concerts and live within reasonable driving distance to a large city.

Basically the main things with this card are the extra 1/2 pt. with purchases and the peace of mind/insurance that comes with it. I'm not so sure its worth getting the Rewards Plus over the regular Gold, but I'm happy with the card. I'm debating on upgrading to Platinum since I've started traveling frequently for business. The lounge access and Gold status in affinity programs might make it pay for itself. Anyway, that's my take on the card.
