I have
always found that a well-written, concise, specific letter does wonders. Not necessarily quickly, but eventually.
Two years ago, after being stranded overnight twice within a week at IAD due to UA issues (crew one time, UA ground delay the other), I was offered 5K miles for my trouble. I refused the offer and sent a letter to UA with a particular compensation request.
It took the better part of two months, but I got precisely what I asked for. Believe me, it was a whole lot better than 5K miles!
