Rental car drop-off is nothing special in MXP you just need to be carefull not to miss the entrance (the VERY left lane coming from the highway). After you returned the car it's a 100m walk to check-in.
As far as I remember, there was no patrol station at the airport nor on the dual carriage way to MXP (but on the other side, when leaving the airport) - at least we did not find one. Perhaps refill your car early.
