Yep. Always leave adequate connecting time. I was talking to a professor friend today who's probably going LHR-POM next month, on a split itinerary ($2200ish versus $5000-$12000 on a single itinerary). The options are pretty much either to stay overnight in Australia, or gamble that your 12-hour flight from London will in fact get in on time or early, and you'll be able to make the connecting flight that's an hour at most from its scheduled arrival.

Pretty sure she'll opt for the overnight. I know I would!
