AFAIK, NWA didn't have all these problems with the DC10's. There have been some issues, but not to this extent. The DC10's were just old. Fuel costs were a big thing, but also maintenance was getting expensive. Their replacement with the A330's was planned before they started to fall apart. Good move here! ^
Personally, I also think it has to do with the airline's image as well. After flying on a nice new plane you walk away thinking "this airline is cool".
After flying on a 767 or an MD11... "shmeh"
