Yikes -- rookie mistake on my part. I meant T2 and not T1. Thanks for the info.
I'm 90% sure that T2 (the AA terminal) is connected airside (I don't think I've ever been in T1). In fact, looking at the map I'm 95% sure, as the exit out of the secured area is down the escalators by baggage claim (marked as the down arrows below Gate 34)
