And from what I understand (never been to the islands myself), good luck on that route...
That's essentially a BF market and the checkbox trick won't work.

The KVS tool will help you however, e.g., look at LAX-HNL on 9-8-2007:

[KVS Availability Tool 2.8.1/Platinum - ITA: Awards/SkyTeam/JP-NWA]
Code:
LAX Los Angeles Int'l CA US [KLAX]
HNL Honolulu Int'l HI US [PHNL]
SAT 08 Sep 2007 / 2 Seats

Carrier Flight From Depart To Arrive A/C Availability
--------- ------ ---- --------- ---- --------- ---- ---- ----------------
NW 803 LAX 14:30 HNL 16:50 757 YS- YA+ CS- CA+
CO 3 LAX 09:30 HNL 12:00 767 YS+ YA+ CS+ CA+
Two standard award BF seats are available on CO 3 (CS+), so there is HOPE for a mileage upgrade.

An easier way might be to search for flights on Co.com with standard BF award availability and try those. It's not a one-to-one relationship, unfortunately, between award availability and upgrade availability. Also, don't forget the surcharge:
