Sorry to burst your bubble, but this is neither 5th nor 4th freedom rights, "cabotage" is in fact the 7th freedom. 4th freedom is the ability to fly passengers and cargo from a foreign country to the country of the carrier.

In this case, QF107 clears INS and Customs in LAX and arrives in JFK as a domestic arrival. Hence the flight is not sterile. The only way you would be able to book QF107 starting in LAX is if there is an international connection involved i.e. the continuing flight to LHR, much the same way Kiwi holiday makers used to be able LAX-HNL if there itinerary later included an international flight from HNL.
